Homeward Bound

We hope you have enjoyed being on pilgrimage with us!

Today, we leave for home.  With a 7 am flight from Tel Aviv its an early wake up call so we can get to Tel Aviv.  We're eating breakfast on the bus even.




We have a long layover (6 hours) this time in London.  I am temped to visit my friend, the Queen, but we'll probably wander the terminal instead.

Mount of Olives and Mount Zion

For the next couple of days we will be in and around Jerusalem.  We start the day today going east of Jerusalem to the Mount of Olives. The Mount of Olives is a ridge situated just East of Jerusalem’s old town, very close to the site of the Temple. It was once covered in Olive trees so that's where the name comes from.  In the Old Testament, the Mount of Olives is explicitly associated with King David and Solomon. In the New Testament the Mount is significant because Jesus visits it several times: visiting Lazarus, the triumphal entry into Jerusalem, praying before his arrest, and his ascension. Jesus would have walked over the mount when traveling from Jerusalem to Bethany, a trip he made often.   According to the Bible, Jesus will stand on the Mount of Olives when he returns in glory.  Jews have long believed that the Messiah will descend from the Mount of Olives in returning to Jerusalem so the area has long been a popular Jewish burial place with graves ...

Notre Dame of Jerusalem

Our hotel in Jerusalem, the Pontifical Institute Notre Dame Center, has a fascinating history.  In the 1800s larger numbers of tourists started to arrive in Jerusalem, so the French Assumptionist order set about to build a hotel for the pilgrims it brought to the Holy Land.  The location would be just outside the walls of old Jerusalem near the New Gate.   The cornerstone was laid in 1885 and the first tourists arrived in 1888 although construction continued to 1904.   The building was also a seminary until after World War I.  The hotel was heavily damaged during the 1948 war with the south wing unusable due to the explosion of two bombs.  It was used as an Israeli military outpost while the North side was used by refugees.  It the center the Assumptionists catered to a dwindling number of pilgrims.   The Holy See (aka the Vatican) took over in 1972 and the site's restoration became a project very close to Pope Paul VI's heart.   ...

Galilee

Today we visit sites of Jesus ministry in Galilee: the Sea of Galilee, the Mount of Beatitudes, and Capernaum. The Sea of Galilee is situated in Northeast Israel between the Golan Heights and the Galilee region.  At 700 ft. below sea level, it is the lowest freshwater lake in the world and second lowest lake in the world (behind the Dead Sea).  The lake is about 33 miles in circumference so its not very big. The Sea of Galilee lies along an ancient road which linked Egypt with the northern empires. The Greeks, Hasmoneans, and Romans founded flourishing towns and settlements on the land-locked lake including Hippos and Tiberias. It was a thriving area for fishing.
